HA!!! Just kidding! Actually, I wrote a long post sharing a little of what the Lord is working in our hearts but decided to save it as a draft for awhile.
So instead-
What I’ve been reading.
John Ploughman’s Talks or Plain Advice For Plain People by C.H. Spurgeon – This was a new one. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it. Perry sent this to Trey for his birthday. If I hadn’t exercised the privilege of Mother & read this book before Trey knew he owned it I might not have gotten the chance. It is a lovely old copy that has been read & re-read since Miss Clara received it for Christmas in 1901. This is what the author says of this little jewel-
“In John Ploughmans talk I have writtenfor ploughman and common people. Hence refined taste and dainty words have been discarded for strong proverbial expressions and homely phrases….Much that needs to be said to the toiling masses would not well suit the pulpit and the Sabbath. These lowly pages may teach thrift and industry all the days of the week, in the cottage and in the workshop; and if some learn these lessons I shall not repent the adoption of a rustic style.
Ploughman is a name I may justly claim. Every minister has put his hand to the plough: and it is his business to break up the fallow ground. That I have written in a semi-humorous vein needs no apology, since thereby sound moral teaching has gained a hearing from at least 500,000 persons. There is no particular virtue in being seriously unreadable.”
If you can get your hands on a copy it would make a great read aloud during family worship.
Respectable Sins by Jerry Bridges - I’m not quite done with this one yet. It is not very long but I am going through it slowly and trying to digest thoroughly the truths brought forth. This has been a very timely book for me & I am so thankful that the Lord brought it before me.
There is no me without you by Melissa Faye Greene-
I read this last week while I was sick. I can not begin to explain the impact this has had on me.
“There is No Me Without You (Bloomsbury, 2006) is the story of a middle-class Ethiopian widow, who, out of the multiple tragedies in her own life, opens her door to AIDS-orphaned children and is inundated by them, beyond her capacity to care for them all. It tracks the ups-and-downs of her life (from public adoration to denunciation and prison) and follows closely the stories of a dozen stricken families and children, including a few orphans adopted to America.”
I’m still trying to process it so I’ll just share the link to the books site.

The Spurgeon book sounds like a great one… I definitely fall into the plain people category.

I just noticed that a whole paragraph I wrote about Respectable Sins is missing. I don’t know what happened but Josiah is not in themood for me to rewrite it now.
